Winter Blues: A Guide of Natural Remedies to Help Thwart Seasonal Depression

Have you been hit with a case of the winter blues, or as some refer to it as, seasonal depression? You’re not alone!

According to Mayo Clinic, the medical term used to describe the ailment is “Seasonal Affective Disorder” (SAD). It is thought that decreased exposure to sunlight is to blame in most cases of SAD. Our bodies rely on the sun’s rays not only to provide warmth, but also to absorb vitamin D, which is vital to our physical and emotional well-being. As the days get colder and shorter, we find ourselves inside more often than not. Is there anything you can do about it? Absolutely.

Top Extracts has you covered, and encourages everyone to be their own hands-on advocate when it comes to mental health. Whether you’re experiencing seasonal sadness, anxiety, sleeplessness, or all of the above, we have you covered.

Below is a list of natural supplements that can help you to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder and be on your way to an enjoyable season, both mentally and physically. When looking for Seasonal Affective Disorder remedies keep in mind that it may take some time to find the right supplement(s) to help your unique situation, as individual results may vary.

Skullcap Tincture

Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) is a perennial herb that originated in North America, and has been widely used in holistic Western therapy dating back to at least the 1700’s. Known for its anti-anxiety benefits, the herb contains bioactive flavonoids that has been recognized by some as producing a calming, sedative effect.

Quality is everything when it comes to any kind of supplementation, and skullcap is no exception. Top Extracts provides top-notch skullcap tinctures using only a fresh form of the herb, never dried! Take a dropper-full when you are feeling anxious, and/or before bed. You may purchase Skullcap here.

Lemon Balm

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, right? Or you can simply take Lemon Balm, a perennial plant that is known to uplift an ill mood, while also calming the mind. Oftentimes feeling low can also have a detrimental affect on our insides. Most everyone can relate to a sour stomach resulting from an anxious experience. The great news is, Lemon Balm is also noted as soothing the stomachs of those who benefit from it. Sounds like a win/win to us!

Turmeric

Do you ever notice that when you’re feeling under the weather, you tend to have more aches and pains on top of everything else? Turns out it’s not all in our heads. During the cold winter months, our bodies tense up as our muscles lose heat and contract. This can lead to pain and inflammation.

Turmeric has been used for thousands of years to thwart off inflammation, which can wreck havoc on even the otherwise healthiest of people.

In addition to making one more physically comfortable, the herb is also recognized as supporting the brain, liver, and antioxidant capacity. Pepper aids turmeric in providing the best absorption possible, and  that’s why Top Extracts’ capsules are made up of 95% curcuminoids, along with black pepper extract, also known as Piperine.

South African Kanna

The use of kanna as an anti-anxiety herb, which is also noted to help with mood and energy, was first documented in 1662. Kanna was initially used by South African tribes, and is still widely used today.

Top Extracts’ kanna power is of topmost quality, and wild harvested. Its powdered form makes it useful for both capsule use, or mixing into your favorite healthy drink. Among the alkaloids in the plant are; mesembrine, mesembrenone, and tortuosamine.

Rhodiola Rosea

When looking to help with everyday stressors in life, many have found the herb Rhodiola Rosea to be invaluable. In addition to helping with stress, the plant boasts properties that have also aided with fighting off fatigue while promoting energy, adrenal support, and oxygenation. It is no surprise that the herb is popular with athletes, though people from all walks of life benefit from it.

Top Extracts is selective when it comes to Rhodiola Rosea, and provides consumers with top-shelf quality product – it will only make the cut if it contains the standardized 5% Rosavins, which is the herb’s key active compound.

Echinacea

Who loves catching a flu or cold when it’s already miserable outside? Nobody. This is where echinacea comes in. The herb is well-known to boost the immune system, and is often used at the onset of illness. If you feel like you’re coming down with a bug, or are already sick and want to fast-track your way back to health, echinacea should be on your list.

Top Extracts’ echinacea tincture blend also incorporates fresh ginger root, giving the already-powerful herb an added boost. Click here to order yours today.

Passionflower

The winter blues and anxiety tend to go hand-in-hand – if you’re burdened by one, it’s likely you may also suffer from the other. Passionflower is an underestimated herb that is well-known for its calming properties.

Top Extracts’ fast-acting passionflower tincture can be added to your favorite tea, or for even faster results, can be held under the tongue. You can order it here.

Sleep Tincture

What’s worse than seasonal depression and anxiety? Having the aforementioned, and a lack of sleep. Great news. Top Extracts has you covered here as well. The Sleep Tincture combines six highly-valued herbs, including melatonin, that support a healthy night’s sleep. Rest easy, and order yours here.

Kava Extract

Perhaps one of the most effective and popular herbs to help alleviate stress and anxiety is Kava.

Top Extracts’ Kava Extract is put through a stringent process in order to ensure you the best-possible product. All impurities are removed via a Supercrital CO2 extractor, leaving only the herb’s finest qualities behind; Dihydromethysticin, Kavain, Dihydrokavain, Yangonin, and Desmethoxyyangonin.

You may order Kava Extract by clicking here.

Tyrosine

Tyrosine is a supplement known for it’s natural anti-depressant qualities. It’s said to be so effective, that even members of the United States military benefit from its use – as it’s thought to help reduce and even eliminate our physical and emotional responses to stress. You can purchase Tyrosine at your local vitamin or health store, or online.

B & D Vitamins

As stated earlier in the article, our bodies may lose out on essential nutrients, including vitamins, during this time of the year. It’s always a good idea to get your levels tested by a medical professional.

Many people become vitamin D deficient during the winter months, simply because we often don’t get enough sunlight. In addition to trying a supplement, you will want to eat more foods rich in vitamin D, including but not limited to; eggs, canned salmon, milk, mushrooms, orange juice, and yogurt.

Also important are B Vitamins, which there are eight of. You can purchase supplements that contain all of these, called a B-Complex vitamin. This supplement helps prevent and aid depression, as well as aiding with anxiety and mood.

  1. I am grateful for Kratom this time of year because I get super depressed ( more than normal ) during the winter months! Kratom helps me get more motivated so I can have a better day!

  2. Kratom helps me but I also drink herbal tea with chamomile, lemon balm, ginger, spearmint, peppermint, passion flower, licorice, lemon grass, hibiscus and rose hips. I also have a lot of people that stop by to visit along with a husband that has an awesome sense of humor.

  3. Great article, kratom helps me in so many ways and being able to drop my anxiety and depression meds (with my doctors approval) has been the best part.

  4. I find that making sure I get up early and having a regular routine helps me stay upbeat and active during the dreary winter months. Something as simple as making your bed everyday right after getting up can keep you from wanting to lay around all day. A little bit of green thai or white maeng dai can do wonders for productivity too of course

  5. I find exercising is one of the best tools to fend off the winter blues. I personally use Thai Chi, tailor fitted physical therapy stretching, and walking on the treadmill or outside with my dog. Baths or whirlpool with epsom salts and a good cup of the revive kratom tea to top it off!

  6. I decided to give a light therapy lamp a try and I definitely notice a difference! I was plleasantly surprised because I was pretty skeptical about it at first.

  7. Kratom is great for the Winter Blues. I Mix my Kratom with- Tbsp of Tumeric, Tbsp Honey, Half tsp Black Pepper (to release medicinal effect of Tumeric) in a smoothy with Banana, Strawberries, Greek Yogurt, vitamin Juice. if you make a 16 oz smoothy the Kratom is hardly noticeable. These smoothies are a great pick-me-up.

  8. Kratom heps me so much with anxiety and depression from the terrible Winter Blues. It helps give me back some joy I normally would not have in the cold winter months.

  9. Lol, wow, I use almost all of those! DLPA might also be worth considering, and it’s featured in The Mood Cure, a fairly prominent book in regards helping with all cases of the blues.

  10. Upstate New York can get quite gray & cold during winter. Kratom is my secret weapon (not so secret really) to stay smooth. It as also helps with joint pain. I’m thankful for it. Organic OJ & a bit o’ powder changes the blues & hurts to open the day to inner sunshine.

  11. I use Kratom to help combat the winter blues when I can afford it. Trying to get sunlight and warm menthol baths help a bit as well.

  12. I’m a Colorado raised girl so I actually kinda like winter. 🙂 But it can weigh on you at times. I usually cook a big pot of chili or zuppa toscana and have friends and family over for a meal. That always cheers everybody up a bit. Plus, my five year old is crazy for snow, so if we are lucky enough to get any in nc, her excitement and enjoyment of snow angels and snowmen really helps keep the blues away. 🙂
