Does Kratom Show Up On Drug Tests?

So you’ve landed a new job, made a sports team etc. and are wondering if kratom will be detected on a drug test? We’ve got the answers for you here, and are confident you’ll have a better understanding once you’ve read the details.

First off, the good news. Kratom does not typically show up on standard employment drug screening tests. One exception that comes to mind is the Department of Transportation (DOT). They do include kratom in drug panel tests for employees.

This may seem silly, as kratom in its natural form will never produce a “high,” as some associate it with. Why’s that, you ask? Mainstream media has a way of exaggerating stories, and of course most know about the fear mongering articles. You know, the kind where they say someone died from a “kratom overdose,” when in fact they had drugs like heroin or methamphetamine in their systems?  The truth is, if the headline can be sensational enough, it’s likely to produce revenue via clicks.

What Is Typically Included On a Drug Screen Test?

All of this said, 5-panel drug tests are the main tests used to detect drugs, which doesn’t include kratom. Instead it typically tests for THC, Opiates, PCP, Cocaine, and Amphetamines. Many employers also test for benzodiazepines, such as Xanax.

It makes sense that most tests don’t include kratom, since it is NOT a drug, but rather a botanical. You could argue the same about marijuana. But that’s a whole different ball game, not to mention many employers stopped testing for it in recent years.
Kratom is also extremely expensive to test for, so most companies are not going to worry about it. If you have a drug test coming up, do a little research to see what type of drugs they test for. Again, it’s highly unlikely that they’ll test for kratom, but also not unheard of. Of course you’re better safe than sorry. If you want to be sure to pass, take about a 3-7 day break. Three days if you’re a light consumer, and about a week if you take it more often.
